Abstract

Lycopersicon esclutentum (MILL.) is a popular vegetable that is grown or cultivated all over the world. Experiment was  performed in Phycology Lab of Government College University, Lahore to study the effect of fresh water algae on two varieties  of tomato seeds Red Hero and 45-65. Algal extract of different concentrations 10%, 50% and 100% was prepared and control  was distilled water. Germination of seeds was observed after every 3 days till 15 days. After 15 days growth parameters like shoot length, root length, leaf number and leaf length were measured with steel rule. Results showed insignificant difference in  variety type and significant difference in interaction between variety type and concentration level and also significant difference  in growth parameters at control or at other concentration levels of algal extract 10%, 50% 100%. Germination percentage was  calculated germination percentage of Red hero was 93.70% and germination of variety 45-65 was 95.80%. Maximum growth  parameters (shoot length, root length, leaf number and leaf length) and seed germination was observed in Red hero and 45-65  variety at 10% concentration of algal extract and minimum at 100% concentration of algal extract and in control.
